Cubans celebrate after their close victory over Peru on Wednesday at U20 Pan American Cup
San Jose, Costa Rica, May 11, 2017 – Cuba and Puerto Rico claimed direct tickets to the semifinals of the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup as pool winners with the best records after victories over Peru and Puerto Rico, respectively, on Wednesday.
The tournament is a qualifier for the FIVB U20 Volleyball Women's World Championship that takes place in Mexico from July 14-23.
Heidy Casanova racked up 25 points to lead the close victory of Cuba over Peru 3-1 (29-27, 26-24, 18-25, 25-15) in Pool C,
at Gimnasio Nacional of San Jose
Diaris Perez and Ailama Cese each contributed 17 points in the victory while Katherine Regalado, Leslie Leyva and Maricarmen Guerrero finished with 13, 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Peru.
Puerto Rico swept Costa Rica 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15) to finish atop Pool B. Loraine Lopez led the winners with 10 points and Tamara Espinosa had 11 for the defeated side.

In the other match on Wednesday, United States defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21) to win Pool A.
Elizabeth Hall and Regan Pittman topped the scoring for United States with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Dominican Madeline Guillen had a match-high 21 points and Vielka Peralta had 19 in the losing effort.
The winners held a 14-11 advantage in blocks and a slim 4-3 margin in aces. The Dominicans committed 37 errors to 23 by the winners.
In Thursday’s quarterfinals, Argentina meets Peru in crucial match for the ticket available for the best ranked South American team to the U20 FIVB World Championship to be held in Cordoba and Boca del Rio, Mexico from July 14 to 23. Also the United States play against Uruguay.
In a consolation match for the 7-9 positions, Chile plays Costa Rica.
