Argentina open U20 Pan Am Cup with victory over Dominican Republic

 

Argentineans celebrate their important victory over Dominican Republic in Pool A

San Jose, Costa Rica, May 8, 2017 – Argentina beat defending champions Dominican Republic in straight sets 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20) on the opening day of the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup at Gimnasio Nacional of San Jose on Monday.

The South American side took advantage of an astonishing 33 opponent’s errors while totaling 18 by themselves.

The Argentineans complete their preliminary phase in Pool A playing the United States on Tuesday.

Anahi Tosi had 10 points as the best scorer for Argentina while Dominican Madeline Guillen finished with 13 points in the losing cause.


In the nightcap, Uruguay outplayed hosts Costa Rica 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 26-24) in Pool B, behind the offensive exploits of Camila Bausero who had 23 points. Tamara Espinoza finished with 18 points for the defeated side.

Earlier on Monday, Cuba swept Chile 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-12) in Pool C displaying powerful serves and effective blocking. They led 12-3 and 11-3 in blocks and aces, respectively.

Ailama Cese and Diaris Pérez had 13 and 10 points, respectively, in the winning effort. Chile’s Beatriz Novoa had 7 points.

The U20 Women’s Pan American Cup is a qualifier for the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship to be held in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico from July 14 to 23. It grants two tickets - one for the top ranked NORCECA team and one for the top South American side - to the world event in Mexico.

In Tuesday’s matches the United States debut against Argentina, Peru meets Chile and Uruguay faces Puerto Rico.
