Argentina claim South American ticket to U20 World Championship

 

Argentineans celebrate after the victory over Peru on Thursday

San Jose, Costa Rica, May 12, 2017 – Argentina captured the South American berth at the FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship up for grabs at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup following a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) victory over Peru, combined with the defeat of Uruguay to the United States 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-17) on Thursday.

Argentina and the United States joined Cuba and Puerto Rico as semifinalists in the Pan American Cup taking place at Gimnasio Nacional of San José. The top ranked team from the North, Central America and Caribbean Confederation will get also a ticket to the world event in Cordoba and Boca del Rio, Mexico from July 14 to 23.

Argentina dominated the first two sets of the South American classic but had to overcome their opponents in the third set to claim the win.

Anahi Tosi and Benisse Soria were the best Argentineans with 16 and 11 points, respectively, while Sol Beltramino added 8 points in the win. Peruvians Katherine Regalado and Leslie Leyva each had 8 points in the loss.

The winners held a 9-5 advantage in the blocking category with Beltramino and Candelaria Herrera converting three blocks each.

The United States stormed past Uruguay in the first set and never looked back. The Americans dominated 9-2 in blocks and 5-2 in aces.

Brionne Butler had 8 points, including three blocks, and Elizabeth Hall also finished with 8 tallies for the winners. Camila Bausero had 9 points for Uruguay.

In the elimination for the 7 to 9 positions, Chile defeated Costa Rica 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-19) and will play against Dominican Republic for seventh place on Friday.
