The Dominicans, who had won a silver medal back
in 2009 finally attained the much anticipated gold coming back from two match
points to defeat favorites Brazil 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 16-14)
behind the 32-point performance by towering Brayelin Martinez. One day earlier
they edged Italy with 27 points by the same Martinez.

The Queens of the Caribbean qualified to this
year’s world championship by winning the 2016 NORCECA Continental Championship
held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with a 3-1 victory over hosts United States.

The Dominican program continues to send new
talent through its pipeline to bolster the rosters of its teams so it is like
money in the bank they will present a competitive squad this time around.

Wagner Roberto Rocha Pacheco

Wagner Pacheco joined the women’s volleyball program of the Dominican Republic in 2009 and the Brazilian coach achieved instant success as he led the junior team to a silver medal at the FIVB Women’s U20 World Championship held in Mexicali and Tijuana, Mexico in 2009.
Under the guidance of the dynamic Pacheco, the Dominican U20 team won the gold medal at the Pan American Cup in 2015 after finishing as runner-ups in 2011 and 2013.
Pacheco steered the Dominican side to a bronze medal at the 2015 FIVB U23 World Championship in Turkey after winning a silver medal two years earlier in Mexico.
The flamboyant Pacheco continues to add jewels coaching age-group teams of the Dominican Republic as his teams claimed gold medals last year at the U23 Pan American Cup in Peru and at the U20 NORCECA Continental Championship in Fort Lauderdale, USA.
