USA, Peru and Puerto Rico score victories at U20 Pan Am Cup

 

USA defeated Argentina 3-1 on Tuesday at U20 Pan American Cup

San Jose, Costa Rica, May 10, 2017 – The United States, Peru and Puerto Rico debuted with victories at the U20 Women’s Pan American Cup on Tuesday, the second day of action at the intercontinental competition.

The U20 Women’s Pan American Cup grants two tickets - one for the top ranked NORCECA team and one of the top South American team - to the FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship to be held in Boca del Rio and Cordoba, Mexico from July 14 to 23.

The USA side defeated Argentina 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 15-25, 25-21) in Pool A with Khalia Lanier leading four players with double digits in the scores with 16 points.

Regan Pittman and Elizabeth Hall each contributed 12 points in the victory and Brionne Butler added 10 of her own. Argentina’s Anahi Tosi and Benisse Soria finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the loss.

The USA side meet Dominican Republic (0-1) on Wednesday while Argentina concluded the preliminary round with a 1-1 mark.

Also on Tuesday, Peru handed Chile their second loss in Pool C with a straight-sets decision 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-20) in a contest between South American teams. The Peruvians held advantages of 10-3 and 7-3 in aces and blocks, respectively.

Flavia Montes, who converted five blocks, and Katherine Regalado each had 11 points for Peru and Beatriz Novoa finished with 10 points for Chile.

Puerto Rico beat Uruguay (1-1) in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-14) in Pool B.

The Puerto Rican side outserved their opponents 7-2 with Kris Justiniano landing five aces among her 7 points. Dariana Hollingsworth and Loraine Lopez contributed 9 and 8 points, respectively, for the winners. Uruguay’s Camila Bausero had match-high 17 points in the loss.

In Wednesday’s action, Peru meets Cuba to define top place in Pool C and Puerto Rico faces Costa Rica (0-1) in Pool B.
