Dominican Republic set to face Asian champs in U20 title defence

 

Boca del Rio hosted the Mexico 2017 drawing of lots

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 9, 2017 – Defending champions Dominican Republic have been drawn in a pool with Asian champions China following the drawing of the lots for the Mexico 2017, FIVB Volleyball U20 Women’s World Championship in Boca del Rio on Thursday. 

They will also take on Peru and Poland in Pool B in a tournament that will take place in Boca del Rio and Cordoba from July 14-23.

The Dominican Republic won their first U20 World Championship in Puerto Rico in 2015. They defeated Brazil 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 16-14) in the final, while Italy finished with the bronze medal.

Wagner Pacheco’s team qualifed for the tournament when they won the NORCECA 2016 U20 Championship. The USA won silver and Cuba bronze.

Host nation Mexico will take on European U19 champions Russia, African champions Egypt and Bulgaria in Pool A.
Pool C features four teams who have enjoyed medal success in recent years – Brazil, Cuba and USA – along with Serbia who won silver at the European U19 Championship in 2016.

Italy headline Pool D where they take on Asian silver medallists Japan, European bronze medallists Turkey and Argentina, who qualified when they won silver at the 2017 U20 Pan-American Championship.
